First Day Energy! It’s Expedition Time!
Cedar Gardner · Adult Supervisor
The last 24 hours have been filled with short plane rides and long layovers; but thankfully the extensive journey landed us in the blue waters of the Bahamas last night.
When we landed at the airport in Nassau, we got through customs and hailed 2 taxis to fit our large group. We were lucky enough to have a very entertaining and informative taxi driver who taught us some Bahamian slang and local phrases.
When we arrived at our treasured flagship vessel “Whatever It Takes”, our crew scarfed down a much needed hot meal and debriefed on our expedition schedule for the next 7 weeks. We plan on traveling over 2,000nm from Nassau all the way to Trinidad and Tobago. On the way, we will stop in at some incredible destinations such as: The Dominican Republic, St. Kitts, Guadeloupe, and St. Lucia. Traveling on a boat, however, you never know what adventures you’ll find yourself in — that’s part of the appeal of sailing a 100’ ketch through the Caribbean!
Our first night was a challenge due to a generator through-hole issue which rendered our A/C out of order for the night. Thankfully dinner was more than enough to make up for it. We had chicken and pepper quesadillas with sticky rice prepared by Captain Ken and head of the engineering department, Pluto Brown.
Dinners are quite a task onboard, we have a total of 18 students and adults on board.
Here’s the full crew list:
Tanner Johnston, our fearless leader of the galley and master of preparing delicious meals with students in his department CJ, Alex, Stephen, and Kevin. Cedar Gardner, head of the deck department and storyteller for the boat along with students Anthony and Marcus.
Hannah Baker, lead steward, in charge of keeping things clean, organized, and 40/40 while sailing with her scrubbing extraordinaire’s Nick and La’Maya.
Pluto Brown, our engineering department leader, helps fix problems onboard with his team Asher and Greg. Speaking of, they worked all day on fix our generator and give us ice cold air!
Last but certainly not least, we have Captain Ken who leads our Bridge Department. One of our students, Justin, helps assist Ken with navigation, boat projects, crew briefings and anything else the Captain needs.
Joining us for temporary periods throughout the trip are, of course, our Master of the Vessel Mike, Co-Founder Hunter, and our mental health counselor Ms. Heidi.
We’ll be traveling together for the next 48 days, stay tuned for more stories and adventures! Click to view our video recap!
